NaNoWriMo Prizes, Motivation, and Fun — Enter Here!

It’s November 1, and if you’re participating in National Novel Writing Month, you’ve probably already started knocking out words. I thought it’d be fun to give away some prizes to help motivate you during your journey. How about some Amazon gift certificates? And maybe a couple other goodies?

Here’s how it will work:

  • Post a comment here with your email address and a link to your NaNoWriMo page (i.e. mine is http://nanowrimo.org/participants/goblin_writer). If you like, tell us about your book and your goals. Other writers with common interests may want to “buddy” you.
  • Every Friday (the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th), I’ll randomly pick a winner from those who are on target with their word counts. That winner will receive a *$25 Amazon gift certificate.Β That means four chances to win if you keep up with your word count.
  • In addition to the weekly prizes, at the end of the month, I’ll give away a $50 gift certificate and a copy of Scrivener (the software I’ve been using to write for years) to a final lucky winner.
  • Lastly, I’ll be giving away some random $5 gift certificates here and there during the month to folks who keep popping in and commenting on these blog posts (keep using your NaNoWriMo address, so I know you’re a participant). If you buy from independent authors, that’s often enough to get you a book or two.

All right, that’s it. Easy rules, right? Let me know if you have any questions, and get to it! πŸ™‚

*If you win and you don’t have Amazon in your country or simply prefer to shop in another store, let me know and we’ll work something out.

Update: You don’t have to write your email address in the body of the comment, just in the form where it says email. That way I can see it but the spam-bots of the internet can’t!

Awesome. Thanks for the motivstion, Lindsay.

This year I’ve decided not to be so serious, hoping that’ll help. the Old WIP has been put on the Back Burner for New Year’s, working on an Idea that seems more fun.

  2. Andrew43 says:

My novel is the continuation of a Medusa’s story retellling (that is actually yet to be written. Go figure. *rolls eyes*) that involves her daughter, her husband and the man who took in her daughter.

  3. Talia says:

    Too bad I can’t write…. *sulk*

  4. Dava Stewart says:

Lindsay — About a month ago, I came across your name in a post on The Passive Voice, and today I saw it on Twitter — I think Joanna Penn may have sent out a link to one of your posts. Anyway, it feels as if we should be better acquainted.

This is the first year I’ll be participating in (rather than observing) NaNoWriMo. You are offering great prizes and motivation — thanks!

    My page is http://nanowrimo.org/participants/davastewart.

I’m writing a mystery/thriller type story, which is way out of my comfort zone, and 3,000 words in, a lot of fun. Anyone who wants is welcome to “buddy” me.

  5. Sara says:

I’ll be doing it this year for the second time. We’ll see how it goes.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/smeehan. Writing buddies welcome. πŸ™‚

  6. Joseph Lallo says:

I’ll be giving NaNoWriMo a try again this year.
    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/jrlallo

This year, inspired in part by how delighted my Mom was by your own books, I’m going to give Steampunk a try. The book’s called Free-Wrench–for now, anyway–and as additional motivation to get it done, I’ve already reserved a slot with an editor to get it polished up afterward.

  7. Carradee says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/carradee

November’s the “Month of Finishing Things” for me. My two main projects are non-fiction: a guide on how to focus, and a book on how to write essays efficiently without harming your grade. I also have two novelettes which I hope to finish.

Considering I also am recovering from some significant health issues, increasing my workload, and moving to a new apartment… We’ll see what happens. πŸ™‚

  8. Thank you for the opportunity! Also hoping to connect with some other writers. I’m doing a double NaNo this year. Trying to get a children’s Christmas novel first draft done that’s been stewing in my head for years and also launch an adult urban fantasy short story series with a novel.

    This is me: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/zeroangel

  9. Anverie says:

This is my first NaNo (although I can’t start until after work hours, alas) and I’m looking forward to the challenge.

I’m writing an urban fantasy novel involving a girl, two guys, summoning, possession and a whole lotta chaos. Now with BONUS! real-world diversity and subversive gender/social issues.

  10. I’m in for my 4th NaNo. I’m working on a paranormal romance with werewolves. I figure I already have witches and vampires, might as well go for the trifecta.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/patricia_eddy

    Writing buddies welcome!

  11. Anthony says:

I love NaNo so much. I’ve missed the past couple of years, though this year I’m all kinds of pumped up for it. I’m hoping to use this NaNo as sort of an ice-breaker for my own novel! Cross my fingers I finish at least a good chunk of it during NaNo! Hoping to publish it as an ebook once I’m finished.

Goin’ for the pirate theme, too. Everyone loves pirates. Hopefully my plot is just different enough to draw in a few interested folks!

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/ermine-jedi

  12. Emily says:

This is my first NaNo, after I got over my negative mindset about other parts of life (running), I discovered that the negative self talk I tortured myself with in other regards of my life got much quieter as well, hence my decision to really give writing a try. I have always wanted too, but told myself I didn’t have anything to offer the literary world that wasn’t already out there. Thanks Negativity… Anyways, now that I’m over that part and consistently lying to myself that I am awesome and have something to contribute, I’m giving things a go!

My book is still in loose concept, but basically it’s about a young woman and her adventures into finding herself, getting out of oppressive situations, and learning to fight for her independence.

  13. Alison M says:

First year n00b here needing encouragement! I have two kids that are a priority to me but I also need my “quiet mommy time” which involves much writing interspersed with cat naps.

    NaNo: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/alisonmcutesybutton

Now to go add one of my favorite authors to my buddy list on there! Squeeee!

  14. Jane Bailey says:

Wow, this is really cool! Thanks so much for doing this!

    nano link: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/yamikuronue

I’m starting what will be my fourth novel (the third is still being worked on outside of nano), a sequel to my novel The Hunt.

  15. Liz says:

First year attempting NaNoWriMo, and I must say I got suckered into it from your self-publishing posts on Goodreads!

I’m taking some 15th century characters from a role playing game and sticking them in a steampunk setting. Writing buddies welcome!

  16. RaikouNeko says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/raikouneko

I’m writing a sort of modern fantasy. I don’t have a title, synopsis or excerpt yet, but I’ll change those as I get a feel for where I’m taking it.

  17. Lily says:

This isn’t the first book I’ve worked on, but it’s my first year doing NaNoWriMo!

Others are welcome to add me!

I’m participating this year, but I’m heading in with no plan whatsoever. I just want to have fun and see where this little project takes me. πŸ™‚

  19. Edna Houston says:

Terrific! Every year we willingly submit ourselves to this torture so it’s nice to find others in the same boat.

Jhael dar Rousseau has spent much of his adult life haunted by a dark past not of his choosing.. no future, no chance at redemption, at least not in his eyes. Only his promise to the one man who gave him hope keeps him going and even that is tinged with despair. He ekes out a living as a sell-blade, the only trade he really knows. And then one day he is hired to escort a mysterious woman to a secret meeting; one that can either redeem his spirit or hasten his end.

    NaNo: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/rion-wilhelm

  20. Kaitlin says:

So lovely! Amazon is definitely a great way to motivate a Wrimo! I’m like 10 words shy of today’s word count goal, but I should be at it by the end of the day.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/kthrog

My novel has a working title of Clouds of Fiction right now, and while I hate genres, I would call it adventure/fantasy/sci-fi/ish. It’s about a girl named Phoebe Hawthorne who’s grown up in a world she’s not from, and she’s finally decided to try and find that world. She just has no idea how dangerous it’s going to be! She’s from a very literary peaceful world, and the world she’s going to discover is nothing like that.

  21. Ava Jae says:

This is great! Very generous of you. πŸ™‚

This is my NaNo page: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/ava-jae

    And my e-mail is avalonjaedra(at)gmail(dot)com.

  22. Alaina says:

Of course I shall be nanoing again this year πŸ™‚

    My profile is here: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/a_rachelle

I started a story a few NaNos back that introduced the world of the Ishaelie, which is on the verge of the return of an ancient enemy. This year I am returning to continue the stories of Ayree, Shalen and company as the threat becomes much more real.

  23. I took a two year hiatus but now I’m back and itching to write my next novel. It’s a paranormal mystery called Dead Time. I have most of the information on it on my profile, just need an except.
Good luck to everyone and have fun!

  24. S.A. Mason says:

I’m participating this year! I’ll be writing the second book in my sci fi adventure series. The first book, Renegades, was just published yesterday!

    page: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/boston-bee

    Looking for writing buddies!

  25. Kerry Howard says:

Hello NaNo-ites. What a fabulous idea. I had been wondering how I found NaNo buddies.

This is my second year but this time I’ve done more planning and have set my sights on completing 50,000 words of a novel The Milliner’s Spy. It’s World War 2 espionage set in a hat shop in London. The inspiration came from nothing more than seeing an account book entry for Winston Churchill’s hats. The book deals with meaty themes – final solution, double agents and of course, making colourful hats. Marvellous.

For fun I’ve done a bit of Photoshop fun to make a cover. Already I have found inspiration from having the cover as a visual aid. Makes it seem like a real, achievable project. What prep have you guys done?

I am both excited but also intimidated by the challenge. See you there.

  26. MykaReede says:

Well, I decided to go all-in. Never did NaNoWriMo before, but why not? Decided to create an intro novella for my WIP Romance Fantasy series (one that I could give away like Lindsay does).

Romance, set in an alternate Regency England where parlor magic is common place, but Napoleon has found the secret to exploit it into devastating magical weapons.

There’s spies, traitors, dream stalkers, mystical creatures, and couples finding true love in the midst of chaos.

    Here’s my page (buddies welcome!)

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/mykareede

  27. http://nanowrimo.org/participants/greg-strandberg

I decided to go with an old outline I’ve been kicking around: Tarot Card Killer. It’s a suspense/mystery set in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Here’s my rough blurb:

Jim Sharpe is sick of life, sick of being a cop, and sick of Hong Kong. All he wants to do is get back to London, or even better, back home to the States. And if the findings from last year’s corruption scandal come out soon, he may just get his wish.

All that changes when a dead body’s found next to Victoria Harbour, a bloody Tarot card in its hand. Jim’s called onto the case, and what he discovers promises to not just his world, but the whole city as well.

  28. Kerry Howard says:

Failed the first test (put my NaNo in the wrong place). Let’s try again shall we.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/kerry-howard

Good luck. Can’t wait to see how you get on over the month.

    Kerry

  29. Khrissi15 says:

    Hey!Writing buddies welcome! πŸ˜€

This NaNo I am writing the sequel to the novel I wrote for camp. After the tragic murder of his love Brazilie Tereson sets out on an adventure in the outside world (which he hasn’t seen in about 9 years) to find himself and get away from the ghosts that haunt him.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/khrissi15

  30. I’m just settling in to eat lunch and write my NaNo words for the day. Speaking of, what time are you going to draw winners on Fridays? I want to make sure I get my daily allotment of words done before then. πŸ˜‰

We’ve been NaNo buddies since last year, but here it is for everyone else – http://nanowrimo.org/participants/l-christensen

This year I’m being a rebel and writing non-fiction…though I figured out a way to genre-bend the non-fiction into almost-fiction. It should be fun!

  31. Anna K. says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/anna-kringle

Fun! I’m writing a fantasy story this year: Middle Ages-ish. Abused shut in girl who leads a revolution against her tyrannical uncle.
Also some elemental superpower stuff thrown in the mix.
I’m always horrible about getting my words in, but *fingers crossed* for this year!

  32. Great prizes, thanks for doing this! I’m participating again this year (I won last year, and in a couple years when I was in college) at http://nanowrimo.org/participants/valcapone/

Today I’ve got 1,694 words on the page of my sexy murder-mystery “The Case of the Cunning Linguist.” There’s a stripper-turned-PI on the case of a dead priest; should be both profane and pro-fun. πŸ˜‰

My other goal is to meet some writers in my area (San Diego) during NaNoWriMo, so hopefully I can bust out of my writing cave for some of the weekend write-ins and meet-ups.

  33. Musingsby says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/musingsby

This is not my first attempt at NaNoWriMo, but hopefully it will be my first time crossing the finish line! Plot synopsis to come, I haven’t quite figured it out yet. Gotta start writing it first!

  34. Ruby2 says:

This will be my 8th novel, if I make it to 50,000 words. I’m writing a fantasy detective novel and always looking for writing buddies.

  35. Julie Fugate says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/julie-fugate

First time participating and now added motivation from one of my current favorite authors. So cool.

    I’m young adult Christian fiction.

This book will be about two teen girls at odds, who discover they are share the same father, a dangerous criminal. Is the discovery a blessing or will he destroy both of their lives.

  36. Helen says:

Great prizes! Hoping this year’s first draft will be more coherent than last year’s!

  37. CJ Janzen says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/cj-janzen

    I’m starting today!!! Sooo excited!

  38. CJ Janzen says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/cj-janzen

    err..umm..didn’t read the whole thing.

This is my first book attempt ever. Anne McCaffrey, God rest her soul, was the writer who captured my imagination and helped teach me how to read. Reading since then has always been a passion, though it’s still hard for me. So, I am attempting to write a Sci-Fi fantasy book. It won’t be as good as Namish’a Ship, but, I’m going to give it a try. I wrote a short story about the concept during a coursera.com – Creativity Innovation and Change course over the past 2 months and I’m feeling inspired. I just hope I will be physically strong enough to do it. (I’m ill, but thankfully, not dying!) Soooo, my goal is to write my first book and then hope to publish it on smashwords! haha…I always read it a smashswords for some reason…yes, I’m dyslexic πŸ™‚ that that just makes life more fun…hahaha

Best of luck to everyone else taking this journey!!!!

    ~~ocean hugs~~

    CJ Janzen

  41. http://nanowrimo.org/participants/Lady Jay

I love your contest and I hope everyone has a great Nanowrimo month. I am writing a middle grade steampunk western. So far I have 1500 words written. I have to finish by the 22nd since I will be out of town after that, but I am so excited that I know I’ll finish early. I’d love to be anyone’s writing buddy. Happy novelling!

My story is about a knight who’s a female on a quest with a magical key that can crumble the world if in the wrong hands.

  44. Craig says:

(Email is in the submission form, but I don’t really want to post it publicly.)

I’m just starting with two characters and seeing where they go. I have no idea what the plot is, but in the first day it’s already gone places I didn’t expect.

  45. lastlivingpoet says:

I never enter contests because I never win, but I’m just too excited about NaNo. This is my 8th one!

  46. PM Ray says:

What a great idea! Tend to mostly lurk but just wanted to also say thanks for all the great posts on writing and the many wonderful hours I have spent reading your works.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/palemedes

Book is a retelling of Tristan & Iseult from the pov of Tristan’s rival, a moslem knight.

My goal is to actually win this year. Keep dabbling and giving up when I fall behind.

  47. Valerie says:

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/laxgangrel

I’m writing a novel that may actually turn out to be scary. That wasn’t the intention, but that’s what the outline is starting to resemble. The original intention was urban fantasy, but it’s going to a pretty dark place.

Thanks for providing such awesome motivation. I was planning to do NaNoWriMo anyway, but this I think this will help me stay on track.

  48. Lucy says:

This will be the first year that i participate in NaNoWriMo. Actually this is the first year that i have even heard of it. I’ve been trying to write a story that’s been in my head for a while now but just can’t seem to get anywhere with it so today i started something totally different in the hopes that i can get somewhere with it. I don’t have a name yet, mostly because i’m not sure where i’m going with it but so far i’m thinking The Knights of Glore. I plan on it being a fantasy novel taking place roughly in the medieval times. Still working on who i want the main characters to be…but i’m thinking a double POV.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/clgentry06

  49. Laura says:

Okay, I’m going to give this a try. I keep telling myself I want to write something. This time I’m dedicating effort to it. I have hopes to take recordings of various older relatives and combining them into a short story collection. That’s my starting thought. Of course, where I end up may be a totally different story.

Thanks for the added incentive to get in gear!

  50. Diane Evans-Prior says:

Bring it!!! Thanks for your support, Lindsay!

  51. Yay, NaNo! This year I’m writing a dark YA urban fantasy.

    NaNo page: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/anagramforink

It will be my fifth year participating and (I hope) my fourth year of “winning”.

  52. jenn says:

Sure, I’ll give this a try!

I’ve been kicking around the the idea of a “steampunk in space” sort of Amelia Peabody adventure sort of pulpy thingy. We’ll see what happens I guess!

  58. This is my third Nano novel. First was scifi, second was alternate history fantasy, and this year I’ve got a plot worked out that would be a possible story behind the lyrics of Saint James Infirmary. There’s a miracle at the end, so perhaps it will be urban fantasy?

I started writing “Adelaide Goes To Nashville” today, the sequel to “Adelaide and the Battle of the Bands” and I’ve written 2,920 words on day one, which is a fairly solid start for me. I want to “win” for my first go around on nanowrimo so I can focus on other things for the holidays. It’ll be great to have another book out in early 2014 as well.

  63. Hi Lindsay,

Ryan Sanders sent me here! What a great motivator you are! This is my first year. My novella is about a young girl’s experience growing up in a world of crazy chaos with a mother who is mentally ill – pulling from real life experience. I’m aiming it towards young adult. Thought I’d be serious but honestly, life with a schizophrenic mother does have some “what the hell” moments. Genre will be similar to Go Ask Alice or Are You There God? It’s me Margaret.

    Cheers!

    Jonna

  64. Liz says:

This is my second or third year doing Nanowrimo and I’m just trying to finish a novel I started some months ago before my schedule became hectic. I usually don’t win anything, but I like the community here, so I’ll participate. I have been saying for years that I would get to know more writers online so in addition to working on my novel this month, I am going to try and comment on blogs and writer’s websites more (usually I’m just a lurker).

I’m hoping to get at least 1000 words tonight. That usually isn’t too hard for me. I’ve had great days where I’ve been able to write 10 k, but I’ve been horribly distracted by other things for the last few months so I’m trying to get back on target.

This is my first year to do NaNo. I’m still trying to learn the ropes. Love that you’re offering so much encouragement!

  66. I wrote a short story last year, and I have lots of ideas for how to expand it into a larger piece.

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/gamergrrl

Its kind-of a modern day fantasy/comedy about a girl who likes D&D way more than she should.

  67. Jodie Rybolt says:

Hi Lindsay! So glad you are my buddy for this year’s nano fun! Good luck with you story. Can’t wait to read it!

I am writing a mystery this year about a lost island and the people who live on it.

  68. This sounds like a really cool idea for a contest!

Here’s my NaNo info. Anyone who wants to be my buddy is welcome. I will be your buddy back!

    http://nanowrimo.org/participants/songcrystal

My novel is a young adult fantasy set in a secondary world where monster catching is at the heart of society and one young stranger to this whole idea is about to go on a wild journey of exploration and self-discovery. Oh, and there are cute monsters who can disappear into the void, shoot fireworks, and more. There’s even a cheerful, caffeine-addicted flower monster. You know, just so that’s there’s something for everyone.

    • Oh, and a little about me. I’m late twenties, just got married, and am attempting to do NaNo for the first time in years while also buying and moving into a house. Lindsay, I’ve been reading your blog for about a year now, and I absolutely love it! It’s one of the reasons I’ve had the confidence to try and come back to writing. Keep doing what you’re doing; I’ll keep reading! πŸ™‚

Great idea. Thanks for doing this, I’ve wanted to do this since I first heard of NaNoWriMo last year. Now I might actually do it.

Hey. It’s my first NaNo and I’m already up past midnight typing.

The book I’m working on is a modern fantasy story about a man trying to regain normalcy after events make him the instrument of an almost completely forgotten god. Here’s hoping it stays as light-hearted as I planned

  72. Hey!
My nano has BLOWN UP TODAY!
My goal was 3000 words, but by the time I called it an end for the day (minus a few hour hiatus) I am sitting at over 10k words, it is crazy!

Totally follow me if you want, I am always looking for new Nanofriends!

  73. Moe White says:

    Hi there,

Everyone could use some motivation and this is certainly a kind gesture from someone who is also partaking in this adventure with us!

This is definitely some good good motivation! I’m looking forward to this year (this is year 3 for me). Started off with a cool 2k+ and hoping to have maybe a 5k+ day this weekend.

  75. Melissa says:

I decided while taking the kids trick-or-treating that I was going to give this a try. I have wanted to do it for years, but was either too swamped with academic writing (which saps my ability to write fiction) or just too daunted to give this a go. But I’ve been living with a character for months whose story keeps revealing itself to me, so I’ll be working on giving her a voice. She’s a a very savvy hacker, among other things, living in a society where technology has become even more ubiquitous than now.

  76. Megan Linden says:

Thank you so much for additional motivation! πŸ˜‰

This is my second NaNo and I’m excited to do it again. I’m writing M/M romance story set in the world of U.S. politics. It’s actually a second part of a series I’m working on.

Good luck to you, Lindsay, and to other participants!

  77. Nigel Henry says:

    What a great idea!

This is my second NaNo and I’m working on the sequel to the epic fantasy zombie novel I wrote last year. Word count goals are somewhere in the area of 60-65K.

If I’m lucky enough to win a gift card I’ll write in a scene where my characters win something too in order to make up for the horrible events that are about to happen to them.

  79. Erin says:

I’m going to TRY yet again to write a novel, not a short story. I’m going sci-fi/post-apocalyptic this time, not horror.

“There were old novels about how the world had once been different. How people could live wherever they wanted. How some people lived packed into places called cities, with more people in a square mile than Reemie had ever seen in her life. But ONEarth didn’t allow that to happen anymore.”

  80. Nate D says:

My story is about a guy who, on Halloween, dresses up as a character he created called The Savage Pumpkinator, a creature whose purpose is to smash those who smash pumpkins and protect trick-or-treaters everywhere. Of course, things get out of hand when the character takes on a life of it’s own.

  81. Hi Lindsay,

The contest is a great idea–never hurts to have some external motivation when writing, doubly so during NaNoWriMo. I’ve done NaNo three times before, finishing twice. This year will make three “wins” (yup, that’s determination in my words πŸ˜‰

My novel is called “The Hardscrabble,” and is a secondary-world weird western, featuring newlyweds Thomas Slaughter, a hexer, and Mira Cross, a swordswoman and former enforcer. They used to work for a sorcerer robber baron named Richter, a magnificent bastard if there ever was one, but left his employ for the Hardscrabble, a mining territory where they hoped to start a new life. But their old one catches up with them.

Love to buddy up with anyone here. I’m at:

  85. Jim Caughran says:

Well I got started a day late but I am up to 1997 words and going strong. I believe that by the end of week I will be up sped.

  86. Lyssa says:

Wow, this sounds like a great plan! I’m a NaNo newbie, on my second day of writing. Here’s hoping to make that 50,000 word goal by November 31st!

Will you be checking on all our word counts or something to enter us in the drawings? Just not sure how that works.

Here’s the synopsis of my post-apocalyptic young adult novel: Sixteen year old Fio wakes up from a year-long coma to discover that she has lost her father and her memories in a terrible accident. She and her mother move to a house in the country as Fio begins to put her life back together. But she soon realizes that her mother may not be telling the truth about Fio’s past. A mysterious man from the forest brings more questions when he claims to know Fio, but by a different name. As Fio seeks the truth, she discovers that her own identity is not the only enigma, and begins to uncover deep secrets everyone has been hiding about her past, her future, and the entire world.

I’m trying NaNo again this year with a post-apocalyptic pirates book. Thanks for the added motivation, Lindsay!

  88. Brian says:

My participant page is http://nanowrimo.org/participants/bluekae. This will be my third attempt at Nano, the best I’ve managed previously was 25,000 words. I’ve learned the hard way that once I get behind it is nearly impossible to catch up, so this year I’m making every effort to get at least the 1700 words in I need.

    Good luck everyone!
