Gift Certificate Giveaway Fun: Give My Character a Last Name and…

UPDATE: The contest is closed. See the winning name here.

It’s been a while since I did a giveaway, so it must be time to do something fun.

The prize?

We’ll do two $25 gift certificates. The winners can choose from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or iTunes. (I’d add Smashwords in there, but I don’t think they have a gift certificate option?) You can also choose to forgo the $25 and receive paperbacks of Books 1 & 2 in my Emperor’s Edge series.

What do you have to do to enter? Suggest a name for a character.

I’m writing the fourth Emperor’s Edge book, and it looks like one of the core characters, Maldynado, doesn’t have a surname yet. I gave Maldynado a first and middle name (Maldynado Montichelu) in Book 1, but I’m hunting through my notes, and I don’t think I’ve given his family name yet (he was disowned and doesn’t have the right to use it). One of his brothers will appear in Book 4, so it’s time to find out what Maldynado’s last name is.

For those who haven’t read the books, the family is warrior-caste (aristocrats), and those people’s names end in -crest. (i.e. Hollowcrest, Bocrest, Starcrest)

To enter the giveaway contest, simply leave a comment below with a character name suggestion.

Whoever has the name that gets picked (I may appeal to you guys again to help choose between favorites) will win a gift certificate, and then I’ll pick a random participant for a second certificate. (As long as you leave a comment, you’ll be entered for that.)

Let’s let the contest run for a week, so until Saturday the 21st. And, yes, you can submit multiple suggestions.

Okay, have at it, all. Remember, I need a name that ends in -crest!

  1. Liana Brooks says:

    Brookcrest
    Villacrest
    Rivercrest
Isencrest <– Not related to LOTR at all o:-)
    Thistlecrest
    Rookcrest
    Malcrest
    Vercrest

… "I can not run all the way to Isendgard!"

    :o)

  2. Bruno says:

    Either Charmcrest or Allurecrest!

  3. Cassandra says:

I wanted to stick with the alliteration, and wanted latin influences, so my top choices are:

    Magnacrest

    Marecrest

    Moncrest

all chosen for their root meanings as well as just sounding good.

  4. Dawn Smoker says:

Ok… A couple off the top of my head:

Malacrest – My favorite–I just like how his name would roll off the tongue with that one, even though Mal means “bad”. Maldynado Montichelu Malacrest

    And a few others:
    Brightcrest
Dawncrest (could not resist πŸ˜‰ )
    Faircrest
    Foxcrest
    Stonecrest

*crosses fingers* I hope one of those is good enough!

  5. Valicia says:

    Suncrest
    Falconcrest
    Stonecrest
    Diamondctrest
    Sipearlcrest
    Pearlcrest
    Lioncrest

I love love love all of these. I surely do hope Sic Arius turns out to actually be worrior caste.
    Valicia

  6. Jeanne says:

(chuckles) I have to bow out from the contest, as I regularly crit your stuff, but Connercrest immediately came to mind.

However, since both his first and middle name begin with an “M” his last name starts with an “M” as well. The last name should also be just as long as the other two names.

  7. Valicia says:

    Marioncrest

  8. Tim Meyer says:

    Monacrest
Malecrest (very similar to previous suggestion, but different possible pronunciation)

    Valecrest
    Darcrest

  9. Chandra White says:

    Ironcrest
    Arrowcrest
    Indcrest
    Derencrest
    Stercrest

  10. Robin says:

    Maldynado Ambercrest.
    Malydnado Silvercrest.

  11. Dana says:

    I’m going:
    Rigorcrest

    But I’ll also suggest:
    Lashcrest
    Gravecrest
    Scorecrest
    Mirrorcrest
    Matchcrest

  12. Rebecca Basley says:

anyone say woodcrest, quartzcrest, or maycrest yet? that’s my submissions oh and two from my daughter zombiecrest or ivycrest her name is ivy lol

  13. Amy says:

I’m going with Hedoncrest. Even though it isn’t an “M” name, I think it fits Maldynado’s hedonistic personality!

  14. Jess says:

Some of these have meanings, others I simply like the sound of.

    Agoncrest
    Arborcrest
    Archcrest
    Bellicrest
    Fildoncrest
    Merdoncrest
    Melanocrest
    Mezocrest
    Pelcrest
    Tespancrest

I have tons more, however I don’t believe I have room or time to list them all. It is interesting reading the different answers and I cannot wait to see which one is chosen.

  15. Jenna says:

Right now, the only thing I can think of is:

    Ardencrest

I was trying my darndest to find a good synonym for ‘endearing’, because Maldynado is a very endearing character and I’m afraid ‘Endearcrest’ or ‘Endcrest’ or ‘Endecrest’ just doesn’t sound right.

Thus, I offer ‘Ardencrest’ (the ‘arden’ coming from the word ‘ardent’ – and who can argue that Maldynado isn’t ardent? πŸ˜‰

  16. Shannon L says:

For some reason, I’m thinking his last name would start with an “M” because his parents seemed to really like the “M’s”.

    Mancrest (My favorite)
    Marcrest
    Maroncrest
    Mallencrest
    Maldencrest
    Mannercrest

I just threw these in πŸ™‚

    Evercrest
    Fallcrest
    Wholecrest
    Merrycrest

  17. Mariah Kimble says:

    Markcrest
    Followcrest
    Goldcrest
    Montecrest
    Stagcrest

My daughters said he needs a flower name and suggested
    flowercrest
    rosecrest

  18. Sarah says:

Smashwords doesn’t have gift certificates, but you can gift books now.

I would go with an M name too:
    Mordinocrest
    Magnadyncrest
    Merchinocrest
    Mercencrest

  19. Clare says:

I associate Maldynado with fencing so I suggest
    Sabrecrest
    Eppecrest
    Falchioncrest
    Rapiercrest
    Meleecrest
    Pikecrest

I look forward to learning Maldyando’s family name. πŸ™‚

  20. Kate says:

I was going to the old, rich, powerful vibe πŸ™‚ … At first anyway, then my fingers moved around without my permission and made up their own suggestions.

    Maldynado Marblecrest

    Maldynado Castlecrest

    Maldynado Rowancrest

    Maldynado Ablecrest

    Maldynado Primacrest

    Maldynado Stonecrest

    Maldynado Florincrest

    Maldynado Reddencrest

    Maldynado Rothecrest

Maldynado Botancrest (err, maybe the family l-o-v-e-s plants?)

  21. Mary says:

    Maldynado Montichelu Decrest

I image his family as being THE -crest. They are very proper, never straying from the stereotype of a warrior caste family. That’s just what I imagine because it’s so unknown.

  22. Martha P. says:

    My submission:

    Manticrest

Derived from Manticore, which could provide a family emblem on a herald or shield. One can never have too many mythical creatures around as imagry.

  23. Kyrce says:

Monkcrest, because monks would definitely disown Maldynado!

  24. Diana Hinshaw says:

    Silcrest

  25. Dan Bacon says:

    Maidencrest immediately came to mind.

  26. Peter Spenser says:

    Myrecrest

  27. Ashley H. says:

    Mallorcrest
    Mistcrest
    Munscrest

  28. William MacDonald says:

WOW I LOVE these books!! Whatever you pick I’m sure it will be AWESOME since your books are sooo good. I would like his name to be:

    Mountiecrest

It’s kind of a play off of our neighbors to the norths protectors!!! Anyways keep up the great work!

  29. Sam says:

    Majorcrest
    Warcrest
    Maycrest
    Bonecrest

  30. Khaalidah says:

    Maldynado Broadcrest

    Maldynado Foxcrest

    Maldynado Thewcrest

  31. Kristen says:

I was so hoping Mal was an errant scion of the Starcrests!

Even if he’s not, I do want to know at some point what happened to Fleet Admiral Starcrest’s family after he defected…

    • Lindsay says:

Someone else suggested that to me too, Kristen. πŸ™‚ That wasn’t part of the plan, but it is an interesting idea!

      • Tara tinsley says:

You know if starcrest and Tikaya had a daughter, she would be about the right age for Sespian…. Lol!

  32. Ann-Kathrin Kniggendorf says:

    Beaucrest

    self-explanatory with Beau & Beauregard. πŸ˜‰

  33. Diana Hinshaw says:

    Auracrest

  34. Miwa says:

Sabrecrest! Longsword would work too! πŸ˜‰

  35. Lindsay says:

Thanks for the submissions, so far, everyone! Lots of good options here. πŸ™‚

  36. How about one of these:

    Maconcrest
    Magnecrest
    Mahircrest
    Mancocrest
    Mansurcrest
    Mehulcrest
    Mordecrest

  37. Diana Collins says:

I first tried to think of a word for Mal’s good qualities, however, since he has been disowned, decided to go with a name that was opposite of his attributes. This would be a name he would not mind giving up πŸ™‚

    Cravencrest

  38. RenΓ©e says:

    Maldynado Montichelu Mooncrest

    (^.^;)

  39. MelodyJM says:

    Malyncrest (Malyn means little warrior)
    Baldercrest (balder means braver warrior)
    Kempcrest (kemp means warrior)

  40. Marlocrest – same rolling syllables

  41. Madeleine Kenney says:

Since Maldynado has such a flamboyant personality, I though these might suit him:

    Maldynado Lunacrest

    Maldynado Ashercrest

    Maldynado Farocrest (pronounced “pharoh-crest”)

Maldynado Motorcrest (he is a car-crashing specialist)

    and last but not least…

Maldynado Stellacrest (for multiple reasons πŸ™‚

  42. Celina Rosete says:

Freyrcrest – after the Norse god of fertility
Eroscrest – after Eros, Greek god of love
Fauncrest – after fauns, the Roman counterpart of satyrs, known for their love for women

I think that speaks for Maldynado’s nature quite well. πŸ™‚

    OR
    Manxcrest
    Moorecrest
    Macecrest
    Masoncrest

    For added alliteration fun. πŸ˜€

    OR
    Sablecrest
    Ravencrest
    Larkcrest

For neither meaning nor alliteration, just simply for sounding good. πŸ˜›

    • Celina Rosete says:

      Some additional ones…hope it’s ok…
Sycrest or Cycrest (my little sister’s suggestion)
      Sincrest – sinful Maldynado? :))
Avicrest – after Avis, the Latin word for bird (for his soft spot for chickens :P)
Gallucrest – after Gallus, the scientific name of the chicken, ditto the reason above
Corrcrest – after Cor, the Latin word for heart…because despite his rakish ways, I believe Maldynado has a big heart. πŸ™‚

  43. talibah says:

Smithcrest to balance out the first and meddle names

  44. Mike M says:

    Maldynado Montichelu Morondavanacrest

Morondavana is a Madagascan Emperor Swallowtail.

  45. Amy Murphy says:

I’ve played and won before so should pass up on prizes. But I can’t resist coming up with names that are ‘beautiful but deadly’, in keeping with his personality.

    Daturacrest
    Oleandercrest
    Daphnecrest
Amanitacrest (most poisonous mushrooms, including Destroying Angels, are amanitas)

Personally, I’m taken with the last two. Daphne flowers are just so pretty you’d never guess they were so dangerous. And Destroying Angel? Heck, yeah. And they both sound good when said as a full name, or with just his first and last name. Although that’s just my own opinion.

  46. I tried prefixes that don’t have a meaning.

    Maldynado Montichelu…

    Krawcrest
    Korcrest
    Manacrest
    Grimcrest
    Bavercrest
    Zorncrest
    Zevincrest
    Vancrest

  47. Abbie A. says:

Maldynado Maricrest (you could pronounce/spell this multiple ways)

Maldynado Messcrest (no one can argue he’s not a mess!)

    Maldynado Marcrest

Maldynado Montichelu Taloncrest (someone might already be named Taloncrest…but I thought it sounded catchy with the “t” in “Montichelo”)

Maldynado Quidcrest (I couldn’t resist after his β€œsquid statue” episode in Deadly Games πŸ™‚ )

Maldynado Kaycrest or Quecrest or however you’d want to spell it

I’m sorry if anybody has already said any of these. There were so many, it was hard to know which were not yet used!

  48. tiffany k. says:

    MANCREST
    MOONCREST
    MAYCREST
    MUDCREST
    MINDCREST
    MADCREST

  49. Kirstie Yu says:

    Vahncrest
    Morcrest
    Shorecrest
    Varcrest
    Voncrest

Hope these are helpful! And I can’t wait til the next book comes out! πŸ™‚

    Moonecrest
    Maisoncrest
    Moatcrest
    Mothcrest
    Mikyncrest
    Marooncrest
    Magentacrest
    Milkenhoneycrest
    Moppetcrest
    Magonicrest
    Majestacrest

  51. I froze at Lidencrest/Lydencrest

    …but I also kept considering, Undercrest/Yundercrest

    Plenty to choose from though.

  52. Erwin S. says:

A humorous one would be Gigolocrest, since that is what Maldynado is. For a serious name, how about Magnoviacrest.

  53. Susie says:

Love the series, can’t wait for the next book – please hurry! πŸ˜‰

Several of the character names have Latin or Greek origin, so here are some name suggestions for Sir Maldynado Montichelu, from Latin words (according to Google translate) that I think describe him:

    Vaecrest (Vae = woe to)
    Donecrest (Donec = funny)
    Vircrest (vir = man, virili=manly)
    Ridencrest (Riden = laughing)
    Forticrest (Fortis = brave)

  54. Sue says:

    Great contest
    Steelcrest

  55. Tara tinsley says:

    Feathercrest (would explain his hats)
    Stallioncrest
    Suncrest
    Sabrecrest
    Stalwartcrest

  56. Jodie says:

    Calliopecrest or Kalliopecrest

  57. Starcrest
    Juliaracrest
    Fullcrest
    Malanchacrest

  58. thisfishflies says:

    I love Tarncrest.
But I’m also fond of Linecrest.
And there is always Falcrest or Falcicrest.
And if you wanted to keep up the alliteration maybe Miracrest, Mourncrest, or Middlecrest.

  59. Jodie says:

    Ok….a few more….
Hillcrest (the street a lived on as a little kid)
    Sumitcrest
    Wavecrest
Meriadegcrest (Celtic boys name which means (meaning) great lord)

BTW…love the books and can’t wait for the next one!!

  60. ReGi McClain says:

    Uzicrest
    Kanacrest
    Onancrest
    All mean power/strength

    Ullcrest
    wolf power

  61. Dedra says:

Hollowcrest (hollow as a synonym for vain)

    Anxiously awaiting EE4!!

  62. Bobcrest would be funny–a surname I wouldn’t mind forfeiting if I didn’t have a sense of humor. (get it? Huge Christian names and short and simple surname? BOB! AHAHAHAHAHA! … hum.)

    Linchkincrest? Maldynado Montichelu Linkincrest? Nope.

    Um…

    Maldynado Montichelu Adieucrest *grin*

  63. Hmmm… I was gonna suggest Warcrest. I mean, they are warriors after all, right? πŸ™‚ But I found out someone beat me to it. πŸ˜› So, what about Swordcrest? Or Minxcrest? Or Pentacrest?

  64. anash says:

    turbocrest
    zapcrest
    zipcrest
    modcrest
    Lexcrest

    Thanks for a super giveaway!

  65. Lisa says:

Hmmm, since the family is a warrior-caste family, how about: Warcrest? or Battlecrest? or even Bloodcrest?
It would depend upon the family’s reputation, of course.

I like the sound of Maldynado Montichelu Battlecrest or Maldynado Montichelu Bloodcrest myself. πŸ™‚

Your books sound very interesting. I’ll be checking them out. Thanks and…good luck!

  66. Alanna says:

Mercrest (mer is sea in French, so you could name one of his brothers Ryan…)
Vorcrest, in a nod to LBM’s Miles Vorkosigan

  67. Betsy says:

Talencrest (I moved my post over to your blog )

    Garrodcrest

I guess with Maldynado’s personality and then, I also consider who in their right mind saddles a kid with as many syllables as Maldynado has in his first and second name. I don’t really see his parents compensating for his last name. They wouldn’t have to because he’s a -crest. I imagine them just being extremely ostentatious . So, his last name would have excessive syllables. And although my own sense of taste (hopefully good) would cringe for his first, middle, and last name all starting with the letter M.

So, how about Morrowcrest or Magonedycrest

  68. Dennis Mews says:

    How about Maldynado Montichelu Marshcrest?

  69. snagglewordz says:

    Hi Lindsay,

    Mountcrest

Alliteration and the word mount could be interpreted in a number of ways.

I kinda like Mooncrest as well.

  70. Lela Gwenn says:

    Franciscacrest
    Macecrest
    Glaivecrest

    (all medieval weapons)

  71. Ben_Hummel says:

    Maldynado Montichelu Morningcrest

  72. Ben_Hummel says:

    Stonecrest
    Glorycrest
    Millcrest

    Falconcrest. πŸ™‚

  73. Sherry says:

    Maldynado Montichelu Malacrest

  74. Ashley says:

    Microcrest

Thought of some others but the idea of a mini crest is just silly to me; escpecially in terms of a name for nobility.

    • Ashley says:

Is it dumb I thought more about this after I posted it? Just thinking that as far as Maldynado is concerned –whether he cares for his family name all that much anymore or not — it will probably be significant in some way to Books; be it extraordinary in all seriousness or otherwise. So maybe Bargecrest and then Maldynado would go on to explain it’s importance as to the size of “manly endowment”… Or even the silly Microcrest would work for Books as it would give him something to pester Mal over. And what could somebody possibly to to warrant that given name? Oh blurg.

  75. Victoria says:

    Sabercrest, Switchcrest

  76. Victoria says:

I guess I should explain my choice of names,

Maldynado is a skilled swordsman and a saber is a sword so, yea, Sabercrest. As for Switchcrest, I shortened switchblade and added “crest.”

  77. Helen says:

    Maldynado Montichelu … Salvarnacrest? πŸ™‚

  78. Beth says:

    Awesome contest Lindsay!

Maldynado is many things but to me he’s loyal, enduring, and brave even through all his complaining… so here are a few suggestions that I think might fit πŸ™‚

Maldynado Montichelu Durancrest (taken from Durante meaning stubborn or enduring)

Maldynado Montichelu Montecrest (taken from Monte meaning mountain)

Maldynado Montichelu Rendoncrest (taken from de rendon meaning brave/bold/ daring)

Looking forward to the next book!

  79. Candace says:

Here are some suggestions: Markscrest, Louxcrest, Majorcrest, Holdencrest, Moltencrest and Hawkscrest. That’s all I can think of!

Cool contest, hope you find a name that fits Maldynado πŸ™‚

  80. Alec says:

    Wrencrest

    It sounds like “Rehnquist”!

    Galaxycrest

    It sounds like “Galaxy Quest”!

    Bobocrest

    It sounds like a monkey!

  81. Amy says:

I hope this is where I leave a comment? I was thinking about the name –

    Manorcrest for Maldynado.

  82. Kristina says:

Thanks for he contest, it is so nice to feel involved in the making of your new book.
There are so many good ideas already, hopfully you find One you like.

    My suggestion is:

    Maldynado Montichelu Milecrest

From Latin miles – solider. Used to referr to medieval knights.

  83. Jane says:

A falcon is a bird of prey.

How about Maldynado Montichelu Falconcrest for a warrior-caste family name?

  84. Gail says:

Ohh my goodness what a great diea. Thanks for bringing one of us into your books Lindsay!

    Brynncrest
    Baroncrest
    Silvercrest
    Daringcrest

I just skimmed the comments because I am in a rush so if I put a name down that someone else has already suggested I apologize!

  85. Leah says:

    Rhynecrest
    Zanecrest
    Penchcrest
    Tiercelcrest (tiercel means male falcon)
    Luxcrest
    Magnacrest

  86. Art Greiner says:

My sugggestion for your new book for a surname for Maldynado would be Mannercrest. With the definition of Manner being; a way of doing, being done or happening; mode of action, etc.

  87. Kate says:

For an outlier how about Ludicrest?

  88. Sandra says:

Maldynado Montichelu Maincrest just because I like the sound of it.

Can’t wait for the next book!!

  89. Tiff says:

    Fallcrest
    Wallcrest
    Vauntcrest
    Flamecrest
    Embercrest
    Spirecrest
    Corecrest

And for names keeping with the M theme:

    Machiacrest
    Machcrest
(Those two come from Machiavelli sticking in my head)
    Magcrest
    Maelcrest
    Murcrest

  90. Blythe says:

I agree with Kristina! What a great way for us to feel involved in the development of the next book!

At first I thought of Krascrest, from the Russian word “krasevo” meaning handsome. Plus it does double duty of alluding to the English word “crass,” which I think Maldynado can be at times, even while being charming! πŸ™‚ Unfortunately, Krascrest is a bit of a mouthful.

But then I fell in love with Bellcrest from the Italian word for handsome, “bello.” It just seems to have a nice, crisp ring to it. Pun intended, I guess πŸ™‚

Have fun choosing! There are some great ones on here!

    –BAP

  91. Erin Ivy says:

Okay! When I first read this post I hadn’t read the book yet (on my kindle, just not read yet) but now I have! I was struck by how characters like Maldynado are usually just vain with no depth, while he has a hidden loyal and brave side, and I liked that. So I was trying to come up with some words that meant hidden bravery and looked up these words in Latin.

    fidelis, fidele – loyal
occultus – hidden (this sounds too much like occult)
    irritus, leviculus, inanis – vain
    fortis – brave
    admiratio – surprise
    questio – seeking
    bellus – pretty

From these I came up with:
Fidelbellucrest – pretty bravery (maybe it means that, I’m no Latin expert!)
    Admiracrest – surprise
    or

  92. Elena says:

Someone already posted something similar but for a different reason.

Bellacrest – Bellator is latin for warrior

  93. Morgraine says:

    Mavencrest

  94. Shoshanna says:

    Firecrest
    Goldcrest
    Noblecrest

To be more creative…and stay with the “M” theme
Mandocrest; mando meaning to commit, entrust, order, command

  95. Shoshanna says:

    Whoop…hit enter too soon…

or Mereocrest; mereo meaning deserve, gain, obtain, serve as a soldier.

or Mactocrest; macto meaning to magnify, glorify, honor/ stay, fight, punish, afflict

or Maiestascrest; maiestas meaning majesty, dignity, greatness

  96. Peter Spenser says:

    Moncrest

  97. Dedra says:

    Skycrest
    Mapelcrest
    Harrowcrest
    Finecrest

  98. Mike says:

Love the books – bought all the ones I know of

    Greatcrest

or just ‘Crest’ – his family line can be direct descendents of the original king / emperor lines, and all followers/nobles took their name when they swore fealty – many, many generations ago. Since then another family has claimed the empire.
    Might drive more plot?

Keep up the good work πŸ™‚

  99. Rachel says:

    windcrest

    solcrest

    …anything works, i just can’t wait for EE4! πŸ™‚
